Census Releases Data on Average New Home

The average new home in the United States had 2,480 square feet and sold for $267,900 in 2011, according to the annual report from the U.S. Census Bureau.

The Characteristics of New Housing report compiled information from surveys across the nation on everything from square footage to the type of furnace for both single-family and multifamily housing.

Real estate investors do not typically invest in new properties, but knowing the competition can be invaluable when it comes to both buying and selling properties.

Here are some highlights of the data on single-family homes from the report:

  • 88 percent had air conditioning
  • 48 percent had three bedrooms
  • 30 percent had full or partial basements
  • 54 percent had two stories or more
  • 48 percent had fireplaces
  • 62 percent were financed with a conventional loan, 20 percent with an FHA-insured loan

What do you think?

Even with relatively small numbers for new houses, do these affect your planning?
