Americans Are Still Living Large

Despite recent declines in home values from coast to coast, the long-term trend in the United States is toward bigger and bigger houses.

According to the annual Characteristics of New Housing report from the U.S. Census Bureau, new houses in 2010 are more than 700 square feet bigger than they were 30 years ago, with more bedrooms and bathrooms.

They’re also more comfortable: In 1980, 63 percent of new homes had central air conditioning. In 2010, 88 percent did.
